Congratulations to Emma Tolan and Sophie Staunton, who proudly represented Ireland at the FIBA U20 Women’s EuroBasket Division B Championships in Samokov, Bulgaria.

💚 Emma, a former Eagles player, captained Ireland and once again showcased her outstanding talent. She opened the tournament with a superb 22-point, 12-rebound performance in Ireland’s victory over Azerbaijan and was one of Ireland’s leading performers throughout the championship.

🏀 Sophie, who played with our Women’s Super League team last season, knocked down 14 points including 3x3s against Albania and made an excellent contribution, bringing energy, determination and quality every time she stepped onto the court in the green jersey.

To have two players with strong Cavan Eagles connections representing Ireland at a major European Championship is a fantastic achievement.

We are incredibly proud of both Emma and Sophie and look forward to following the next chapters in their basketball journeys.

🥈🇮🇪 Huge congratulations to Dan and the Irish Over 45 Men’s Team on winning the World Masters Silver Medal!

After an incredible tournament, Ireland came agonisingly close to claiming gold, narrowly losing an unforgettable final to Argentina 60–58. It was a fantastic performance and a game that could have gone either way right to the final buzzer.

While the result wasn’t the one everyone hoped for, winning a World Masters silver medal is an outstanding achievement and one to be immensely proud of.

Congratulations, Dan, and the entire Irish squad on representing your country with such pride and determination.

Say hello to our newest American signing for 2026/27 — sharpshooting guard Darrione Rogers! 🟢⚪

A 5'11" guard from Chicago, Illinois, Darrione arrives in Virginia with a serious scoring and shooting pedigree built across four years of top-level US college basketball.

A former ESPN five-star recruit out of Lake Park West High School, Darrioe spent three seasons at DePaul — earning Big East All-Freshman honours and 2023 All-Big East Second Team — before moving on to Mississippi State in the SEC and a final year at Miami in the ACC. A genuine three-point threat, she led Miami in three-point shooting at 38.5%, and by the time she arrived there she had already racked up 1,399 career points and 234 three-pointers. Her best night? A 36-point performance for DePaul, going 7-of-8 from beyond the arc.

There will be plenty of Cavan interest in the FIBA U20 Women's EuroBasket Division B, with Emma Tolan and Sophie Staunton both named in the Ireland squad for the tournament, which tips off in Samokov, Bulgaria, on 4 July.

⭐ EMMA TOLAN Emma goes to Bulgaria as joint captain of Ireland, alongside Brunell's Ava Walsh.

A broken thumb in a warm-up ruled her out of last year's Europeans days before tip-off. Now fully recovered, she's back as one of the team's leaders.

A product of Cavan Eagles & Virginia College, Emma made history last year as the first Irish player recruited to the University of Oklahoma women's programme, spending her freshman season in the SEC with a side that reached the NCAA Sweet Sixteen (26–7).

⭐ SOPHIE STAUNTON Sophie was a key player for Eagles through 2025/26.

At last summer's FIBA U18 EuroBasket she averaged 11.9 pts, 3.3 reb & 2.0 ast across 7 games — including a huge 26-point, 7-assist game v Denmark. 🔥

That form helped earn her the Under-18 Irish Player of the Year award, and she'll be chasing a similar impact in Samokov. She's USA-bound too, committed to NCAA Division I side Saint Peter's University (New Jersey).

We are proud to welcome two of our own to the Women's Super League squad for 2026/27: Cara Costello and Nnenna Okosisi! 🟢⚪

Cara and Nnenna are home-grown Eagles players who have come up through our juvenile teams and our Pathways programme, and who now step up to the Super League.

Both were pivotal players for our Under-16 team last season, and their progression to the Super League is exactly what this club is all about: giving our young players a clear pathway all the way from the academy to the Super League floor.

Glavins 4 Cavan!

We're thrilled to announce a double signing ahead of the 2026/27 Women's Super League season — sisters Ellie and Emma Glavin are joining the Eagles!

Originally from Tullamore, the Glavins arrive in Virginia with serious basketball pedigree, most recently playing pivotal roles with the University of Galway Mystics at both WNL and WSL level. Both are accomplished international players, having represented Ireland at U18 and U20 European Championships — so they know exactly what it takes to compete and win at this level.

Two proven performers, and the chemistry that comes with sisters who've played together for years — it's a real boost to our Super League ambitions for the season ahead.

🏀 Masters Tournament Action for the Eagles 🏀

The Over 40’s Masters Team were back in action today at the annual Dublin Masters Tournament, competing across three venues around Dublin in a packed day of basketball.

First up was a hard-fought clash against Belfast, with the sides going score for score right into the fourth quarter before Eagles pulled away late to secure a 6-point win.

Game two saw Eagles face Colby, featuring a visiting US side put together by Michael Westbrooks of the well-known Westbrooks family. Colby’s sharp execution and familiarity proved decisive as they claimed the win by 11 points.

The final game of the day brought another tight battle against Templeogue. After an even first half, Eagles found another gear in the third quarter and pushed on for an impressive victory to finish the day strongly.

The team now turns its attention to tomorrow morning’s Silver Semi-Final, where they will face visiting side Zurich at 11:00am in Coláiste Éanna.

🗣️ Coach Darragh Gaffney: “It was great to get the Masters team together again and take the court. Three games across a day is demanding, but welcoming some visiting players for the day meant everyone was able to get good court time.”

Shout-out to the seven Cavan Eagles players who represented the NEBB Knights at the Inter-Regional Tournament in Athenry — Áine, Cara, Emily, Louise, Nnenna, Tara, and Tara.

After three hard-fought group matches, the Knights qualified for the final, where they finished a brilliant second place to the host region Galway.

Well done to Virginia College 1st Year girls, who bowed out of the All-Ireland A Schools Cup in the University of Limerick this afternoon after a tremendous performance against a very strong Castleisland side.

The girls gave absolutely everything and should be incredibly proud of the hard work, commitment, and determination they showed throughout the tournament. Competing at such a high level is a huge achievement, and they can hold their heads high with everything they have accomplished.

🏀 Senior Men – League & Top 4 Champions! 🏀

A huge congratulations to our Senior Men on a remarkable season, completing an incredible League and Top 4 double!

Eagles Men booked their place in the final with a strong win over Blackwater Steelers in the semi-final, while Cavan Lakers saw off Dundalk Ravens to set up a mouth-watering final between two neighbouring clubs.

The scene was set in Carrickmacross on Sunday evening, where a loud and raucous crowd was treated to a superb game of basketball between two evenly matched teams.

Lakers brought youth and speed, while Eagles countered with experience and maturity — and the game did not disappoint.

Lakers started the brighter, taking an early lead thanks to impressive scores from Cillian Murphy and Riccardo Vennettilli. Eagles responded well, with veteran Dan DeBoss hitting from both inside and beyond the arc. At the end of the first quarter, Lakers led narrowly, 17–15.

The second quarter continued in the same fashion, with both sides trading baskets and the lead constantly changing hands. It was a fantastic contest, and at halftime, the teams were locked at 35–35.

Eagles edged ahead early in the third quarter, with the influential Dan DeBoss stamping his authority on the game. Showing exactly why he earned MVP honours, he knocked down 8 points in a row on his way to a game-high 23. Lakers’ Sean Moran kept his side in contention with some excellent scores, but Eagles carried a 6-point lead into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was just as exciting, with Lakers showing a never-say-die attitude. However, a huge three-pointer from Sean Brady, followed by a crucial charge call on the very next play, swung momentum firmly in Eagles’ favour. From there, Eagles held strong to secure a well-deserved 73–65 victory.

Key contributions came across the board, with Ivors Zubrickas and Vito Boronenko both adding 7 points each, along with big plays at crucial moments. A true team performance, with everyone contributing on both ends of the floor.

Coach Ryan McCormick will be delighted with the performance and the character shown by the entire squad.

A fantastic day at the North East Regional Finals for our boys.

Our 1st years put in a brilliant performance to finish as regional runners-up, coming up against a very strong St. Mary’s Drogheda side.

Our 2nd years delivered a thrilling game, edging out St. Mary’s Dundalk with a hard-fought one-basket victory.

Proud of both teams and the effort they showed 👏

McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles brought a highly encouraging first Women’s Super League campaign to a close at the quarter-final stage, falling to reigning cup champions and league leaders Killester in Clontarf.

Pre-playoff narratives did little to reflect the progress made in their debut season. A Basketball Ireland preview suggested the Eagles had merely “stumbled” into the playoffs, overlooking a season that included seven wins including notable victories over established powerhouses such as Brunell, Waterford Wildcats, and Meteors. Those results alone underlined that this Cavan side were able to compete at this level.

Drawn away to Killester, the task was always going to be a difficult one. Travelling to the IWA in Clontarf, the Eagles embraced the challenge with nothing to lose and an opportunity to test themselves against the top team in the country.

The contest got off to a punishing start, with Killester dominating the opening quarter 18-3. Killester’s American, Samantha Haiby, led the early charge for the hosts, hitting two three-pointers on her way to eight first-quarter points. Facing a significant deficit, the Eagles could have struggled to respond—but instead showed the resilience that has been a hallmark of their season.

Cavan produced an excellent second quarter, outscoring their opponents and clawing their way back into the game. Niamh Tolan led the charge with 10 points in the period, helping to reduce the deficit to 32-24 by halftime.

Killester responded in the third quarter with a strong 9-0 run to re-establish control, with Americans Audrey Roden and Sam Haiby continuing to contribute. Despite this, the Eagles remained competitive and continued to battle throughout.

A late push from Cavan, including a 12-point run in the final quarter, briefly threatened a comeback, but Killester held firm to secure a 61-50 victory. Ieva Bagdanaviciene’s double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds proved influential in sealing the win for the home side.

For the Eagles, there were a number of strong individual performances. Team captain Niamh Tolan led scoring with 17 points, while Sophie Staunton added 12 points, including three from beyond the arc, continuing her impressive debut Super League season ahead of her move to Division 1 college basketball in New Jersey.

Katie O’Sullivan delivered a determined performance, controlling play and collecting 12 rebounds, while Ciara Tolan showed encouraging form following her return from injury. Alex Mulligan made an impact at both ends of the floor, while Soleil Barnes contributed eight important points. Mazzie Harris battled hard but was limited at times by foul trouble.

The strength of this Eagles side has been its collective effort throughout the season. Ciara Brady made a significant impact off the bench, particularly with her defensive work and contribution in offence. Caitlin Carroll, Leah Kelly-Flynn and Omotese Osunde Okperan also gained valuable experience at this level, highlighting the depth within the squad.

While the playoff journey ends here, it has been a season of progress for Cavan Eagles. With a solid foundation now in place, attention will turn to building on this year’s progress and continuing that upward trajectory next season.

A special well done to the St Mary’s girls who were outstanding throughout and claimed victory in the final – a superb achievement! 👏

A big shout out as well to Knocktemple girls, who put in a fantastic performance, winning both of their preliminary games before narrowly losing out to their neighbours, St Mary’s, in the final.

The boys teams from both St Mary’s and Knocktemple also did themselves proud, battling hard to reach the semifinals, where they faced very strong opposition. Great effort all around!

A massive thank you to The Cleveland Project Northern Ireland for hosting such a well-organised and enjoyable tournament. We’re also incredibly grateful to the teachers and our American superstars Mazzie and Soleil for their coaching in the schools and for travelling to support the teams on the day.

What a performance from our U14 Hawks in their final league game today against the Dynamites! 🏀🦅

The girls flew high from the opening minute, showing relentless defence and confident offence. By halftime they had built a strong lead thanks to fantastic teamwork, energy, and determination.

The third quarter continued to entertain the home crowd, with the Hawks playing some brilliant basketball. The highlight of the game was a superb behind-the-back assist that set up a corner three-pointer — a real moment of class! ✨

In the fourth quarter the Hawks stayed focused and finished the game strongly, showing the same intensity right to the final buzzer.

Now we wait to see if the girls make the Top 4, but regardless of the outcome they should be incredibly proud of the season they’ve had and the goals they’ve achieved. 🦅🏀💪

🏀 Eagles Show Fight but Glanmire Take the Spoils in Virginia

There was plenty of excitement at the Virginia Show Centre on Sunday as Cavan Eagles Basketball Club wrapped up their regular season with a battling display against high-flying UCC Glanmire, with the visitors eventually claiming an 87–78 victory.

Coming into the game sitting third in the league, Glanmire demonstrated their quality early on, but the Eagles showed great resilience and determination throughout in front of their home supporters.

The visitors made a blistering start, dominating the opening quarter to lead 31–16. Jewel Watkins was the standout performer early on, pouring in 14 points to put Glanmire firmly in control. For the Eagles, Soleil Barnes kept the scoreboard ticking with two well-taken three-pointers.

The home side responded strongly in the second quarter. With Sophie Staunton making important contributions and the Eagles tightening up defensively, the hosts cut the deficit and went into halftime trailing 50–36.

The third quarter saw the Eagles open with a promising 7–0 run to ignite hopes of a comeback. However, Glanmire responded with an 11–3 surge of their own to regain control of the contest. Watkins continued her impressive display, adding another 10 points as the Cork side extended their lead to 74–58 heading into the final period.

To their credit, the Eagles refused to back down. Mazatkan Harris and Katie O’Sullivan each added six points in the closing stages as the home side pushed hard down the stretch. The Eagles’ long-range shooting was a highlight on the night, knocking down an impressive 11 three-pointers.

Watkins proved decisive for Glanmire, finishing with a game-high 35 points.

For the Eagles, Harris delivered a standout all-round performance with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Barnes impressed with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while O’Sullivan finished with 13 points and 5 assists. Staunton added 10 points, and Niamh Tolan and Ciara Tolan both chipped in with nine points apiece. Alex Mulligan and Ciara Brady also played key roles on both ends of the floor in a strong team effort.

The game marked the Eagles’ final league outing of the season and the second meeting between the sides this year. When the teams met earlier in December, Glanmire edged another high-scoring encounter 94–85.

With just one league fixture remaining between St Paul’s Killarney and Brunell Basketball Club, it now looks likely that the Eagles, who finished in eighth place, will face table-toppers Killester Basketball Club in the quarter-finals of the playoffs in Dublin on Saturday, March 21.

Super game last weekend as our Masters team took to the court against BC Leixlip in the Masters National Cup. Unfortunately the result didn’t go our way.

A fantastic battle from start to finish with great intensity, teamwork, and plenty of heart on display. Proud of the effort and spirit the squad showed — this group keeps proving that age is just a number! 💪🏀

🦅 Men’s BIDL Playoff

The Eagles’ playoff run came to an end in the Round of 16 after a tough assignment away to one of the competition favourites, UCD Marian, at Oatlands College.

Facing a sharp-shooting Marian side on their home floor, the hosts started quickly, hitting early threes to open a 21–8 first-quarter lead.

The Eagles worked hard to slow the tempo and create better looks but found themselves trailing 40–23 at the break against a team that would finish with 13 three-pointers on the night.

We showed real character after halftime, competing strongly on both ends and refusing to let the game drift. Vito Boroneko led the charge offensively, attacking the basket and keeping the scoreboard ticking, while the team battled for every possession. Despite the effort, Marian’s depth and outside shooting kept them in control as they stretched their advantage through the third quarter.

The Eagles continued to fight right to the final buzzer, showing resilience and teamwork throughout, but Marian closed out an 87–60 win.

Scorers for the Eagles were Vito Boroneko with 12 points, Dominykas Kerseys with 9, Sean Brady and Alvarado Zubrickas with 8 each, and Dan DeBoss adding 7 in a committed all-round team display.

Though disappointed to exit the playoffs, the experience against a top-quality side will stand to our team.

Focus now shifts back to league action, with the NEBB Top 4s on the horizon as the Eagles look to regroup and finish the season strongly.

Cavan Eagles Come Up Just Short in Road Battle with Liffey Celtics

McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles fell to a narrow 82–75 defeat away to FloMAX Liffey Celtics on Saturday evening in the Domino’s Women’s Super League, following an absorbing contest at the Leixlip Amenities Centre.

With both sides entering the game level on 7–8 records and fighting for every win as the season approaches its conclusion, it proved to be exactly the tight, competitive encounter expected. In total, the game featured 11 lead changes and 9 ties, underlining just how evenly matched the teams were throughout.

The Eagles made the brighter start, moving the ball well and attacking with confidence. Sophie Staunton set the tone early, pouring in nine first-quarter points as Cavan edged ahead to lead 22–21 at the end of the opening period.

The second quarter developed into a tense back-and-forth battle. Both teams traded scores and momentum, with neither able to create real daylight. The Eagles continued to work hard defensively and executed well offensively, but a late push from the hosts saw the Celtics take a slim 42–39 advantage into halftime.

Coming out of the break, Cavan stayed firmly in touch. Strong spells from across the roster, combined with eight made three-pointers on the night, kept the pressure on. However, a scoring run late in the third allowed the home side to stretch the lead slightly, making it 59–53 heading into the final quarter.

True to form, the Eagles refused to go away. Key baskets from Soleil Barnes and Mazatkan Harris kept the contest alive deep into the fourth, but despite the relentless effort and determination shown right to the buzzer, the Celtics found crucial scores down the stretch to seal the 82–75 result.

While disappointed not to take the win, the performance showed plenty of positives — resilience, togetherness, and fight on the road — qualities that will be vital heading into the final stretch of the season.

Two huge contests now lie ahead for the Eagles. They return home to Virginia next Saturday at 3pm to welcome cup winners Killester Basketball Club, before welcoming Glanmire the following week in what promises to be another tough test as the playoff race intensifies.

At Saturday’s home game in Virginia, Tesco Ireland presented a €10,000 sponsorship cheque to the club, a significant investment that will help sustain the Eagles’ Women’s Super League programme at national level.

The funding supports essential costs including national league travel and accommodation, coaching and performance supports, and access to high‑quality training facilities. It also strengthens the pathway for young local players progressing from underage teams into senior elite competition.

Club Chairperson Graham Tolan welcomed Tesco’s continued backing, saying:

“Tesco’s support is helping to drive female participation, local leadership, and high‑performance sport in our community. We are extremely grateful for their investment in our players, our pathways, and our wider mission.”

Tesco is a long‑standing supporter of local organisations across Co. Cavan. Through its Community Fund, the retailer has helped hundreds of groups ranging from GAA clubs to children’s charities. 🦅 Big Night for the Cavan Eagles Men in Gormanstown! 🦅

The Eagles Men put in a dominant performance on the road, powering past the Boyne Warriors 99–48 in what was a real crunch game in the BIDL.

We set the tone early, leading 13–7 after the first, stretched it to 40–20 by halftime, and never let up. Our offense was firing on all cylinders with six big three-pointers, relentless defense, and a huge 23-point run to close it out. At one stage, the lead hit 56 points — a complete team display from start to finish.

This result means we finish the league in 4th place and book our spot in the playoffs 💪

Next up, we’ll face the winners of either the 1st or 3rd conference — away from home — and it’s guaranteed to be a tough battle.

McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles made it three wins in a row on Saturday night with a dominant 83–53 victory over Midlands Park Portlaoise Panthers at St. Mary’s Hall. The result brings the Eagles to six wins from 12 outings and lifts the newly promoted side up the table to joint 6th place.

From the opening tip, the Eagles were in control. Mazzie Harris set the tone early, pouring in 10 first-quarter points as Cavan raced into a 15–7 lead. The second period proved decisive, with the Eagles exploding for 29 points, highlighted by Soleil Barnes and Sophie Staunton, who each contributed 11 in the quarter. By halftime, the scoreboard read 44–16 in favour of the visitors.

The Panthers showed spirit after the break, with Jessica Fressle inspiring an 11–0 run in the third quarter, but the Eagles kept their composure and closed the period ahead 60–35. Any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished in the final quarter, as Barnes added another nine points to cap off an emphatic performance.

It was the club’s biggest win of the season and truly a team effort. Soleil Barnes finished with a game-high 25 points, while Californian native Mazzie Harris was immense yet again with 19 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, controlling the tempo throughout. Sophie Staunton chipped in with 12 points, Alex Mulligan added a valuable 13 points, and Katie O’Sullivan contributed seven points and six rebounds as the Eagles’ depth and balance shone through. Captain Niamh Tolan led from the front with her energy and leadership, setting the tone defensively and driving standards on the floor.

Coach John Stephens will also be delighted to see Ciara Brady returning from injury, while Caitlin Carroll and Omotese picked up some valuable minutes off the bench as squad depth continues to grow.

For the Panthers, Jessica Fressle led the scoring with 17 points, while Ciara Byrne and Lynn Tunnah battled bravely throughout in a tough night for the visitors.

🔜 Next Up: The Eagles now face a huge test next weekend as they travel to Killarney to take on the high-flying St. Paul’s, who currently sit second in the league. The Eagles will have to be at their very best to overcome a well-drilled St. Paul’s side.

McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles delivered one of their most accomplished performances of the season on the road, overcoming third-placed Gurranabraher Credit Union Brunell by 75–67 at the Parochial Hall, Cork.

The result saw the Eagles reverse a 55-72 defeat from the second game of the campaign last October and provided a timely boost for the eighth-placed side as the league enters a crucial phase.

The contest was gripping from the outset, developing into a high-quality, end-to-end encounter that featured 12 lead changes and nine ties. While Brunell converted five three-pointers, the Eagles’ accuracy from long range proved decisive, as they knocked down an impressive 11 shots from beyond the arc.

A tightly contested opening quarter set the tone, with both sides trading scores in an intense battle for early control. Maddie Cluse was prominent for the hosts, while Niamh Tolan provided composure for the visitors as the Eagles edged the first period 16–14.

Brunell responded in the second quarter, finding momentum through Cluse’s scoring to establish a narrow 38–37 advantage at the interval. With home support behind them, the Cork side appeared poised to replicate their earlier-season success over the Cavan outfit.

The turning point came after the break. McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles emerged with renewed purpose in the third quarter, repeatedly nudging their noses in front despite sustained resistance from Brunell. That resilience was emphatically rewarded in the final period, where the Eagles asserted control at both ends of the floor, outscoring their hosts 21–7 to pull clear.

Mazzie Harris led the way with an outstanding all-round display, posting a dominant double-double of 21 points and 15 rebounds, complemented by four blocks and a superb efficiency rating of 35. Soleil Barnes was equally influential, recording 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Sophie Staunton delivered a crucial contribution with eight points, including two timely three-pointers that swung momentum decisively in the Eagles’ favour.

Strong support came from Katie O’Sullivan, who finished with 12 points and five assists, Alex Mulligan with 10 points, four rebounds and four steals, and Niamh Tolan, who added 12 points and nine rebounds in a tireless performance.

For Brunell, Maddie Cluse led all scorers for the hosts with 20 points and 10 rebounds. The Irish senior international captain Edel Thornton added 15 points, while Megan O’Leary contributed 12.

The Eagles now enjoy a free weekend before returning to action away to Portlaoise on January 24, for what promises to be another entertaining game.

Cavan Eagles U16s were on the road in Belfast this morning to wrap up the first half of the Basketball Ireland U16 League 🏀

The Eagles kicked things off with a hard-fought win against Belfast Star in the early game, before Liffey Celtics and Killester proved too strong later on.

It’s been a great first half of the season for this group, and now it’s time for a well-earned Christmas break. 🎄

The Eagles faced one of the toughest challenges in the Women’s Super League as they travelled to Dublin to take on table-topping Killester, knowing it would be a major test in their first season competing at Ireland’s highest level.

The Eagles could not have asked for a better start, knocking down three early baskets to race into a 6–0 lead and immediately putting the hosts on notice. The opening quarter was competitive throughout, with the Eagles matching Killester’s intensity before the home side edged ahead 27–21. Killester found their shooting rhythm in the second period, opening a gap to lead 59–35 at halftime, but the Eagles continued to compete and stay committed to their game plan.

After the break, the Eagles showed resilience and character, battling hard to close the gap, and despite Killester maintaining control to lead 84–64 heading into the final quarter, the visitors never dropped their heads. A strong response in the fourth period, including a spirited 9–2 run, underlined the determination and fight within this Eagles group.

Individually, there were many standout performances for the Eagles. American Soleil Barnes was outstanding offensively, leading all Eagles scorers with an excellent 27-point display. Captain Niamh Tolan once again led by example, contributing 16 points while setting the standard with her leadership, work rate, and physicality at both ends of the floor. Eagles' second American, Mazzie Harris battled relentlessly in the paint, pulling down an impressive 13 rebounds against strong opposition.

Katie O’Sullivan was tireless throughout, finishing with 8 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists, and her powerful drives to the basket repeatedly caused problems for the Killester defence. Sophie Staunton continued her encouraging return to form, playing a significant role and adding 9 points, while Alex Mulligan was her usual dependable self, contributing 9 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists with composure on both ends of the court. Young Omotese Osunde Okperan once again gained valuable Super League experience, continuing her development against elite opposition.

Killester, as expected, showed their quality on home court, led by American guard Sam Haiby, whose exceptional shooting night saw her finish with 40 points. She was well supported by Ieva Bagdanaviciene and Michelle Clarke, while former Eagle Laura McFarland also featured for the hosts.

While not offered as an excuse — Killester were excellent — Coach John Stephens will be hoping for positive news regarding the injuries sustained by Ciara Tolan and Ciara Brady, with the Eagles eager to welcome both back into the lineup in the coming weeks.

A challenging night against the league leaders, but another important step forward in the Eagles’ debut Super League campaign. The lessons will be taken, the positives built upon, and this group will continue to grow together 💙🦅

What a fantastic day for schools basketball as Eureka Secondary School and Virginia College — both featuring a number of Eagles players — faced off in a thrilling North East Region final!

In an intense showdown, Eureka’s U16s edged past Virginia College after the sides finished level at full time, securing a dramatic 36–34 overtime victory. The skill, spirit, and teamwork on display from both teams made this a memorable occasion for everyone involved.

Both schools now advance to the next round of the competition — a brilliant achievement for these hardworking squads.

McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles produced a sensational 98–94 overtime victory against the Wildcats at Mercy College in Waterford.

The game began at a frenetic pace, with the Eagles initially under pressure as Waterford raced to a 6–0 lead in the opening minute, courtesy of three unanswered baskets. But Eagles guard Ciara Tolan quickly swung momentum back, knocking down two huge three-pointers to signal that Cavan would not be overawed. From there, the contest turned into a seesaw battle, defined by 11 lead changes and nine ties, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.

It was a true team performance. Eagles’ American Soleil Barnes led the way with 32 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals, while Mazzie Harris delivered a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds, including a crucial three-pointer and driving layup in overtime.

Ciara Tolan had her best game of the season so far and finished with 23 points, calmly sinking free throws in the dying seconds of regulation to force extra time.

Eagles captain Niamh Tolan led by example with yet another tenacious display, inspiring her teammates, and Alex Mulligan came up big at crucial moments, scoring key baskets and putting in a relentless defensive shift.

The return of Sophie Staunton, back from a preseason knee injury, also lifted the team, as she drained a three on her first Super League shot and contributed valuable minutes. Meanwhile the excellent Katie O’Sullivan anchored the backcourt with her relentless defense and smart ball-handling.

While the Eagles were impressing, Waterford showed why they have been dominant this season. Coached by Hall of Famer Jillian Hayes, the Wildcats entered the match as one of the top teams in the Super League, blending domestic stars with import talent. Irish internationals Sarah and Kate Hickey again led the charge, while Americans Tiarra Brown and Alyssa Frescas provided scoring punch and strength on the boards. Alyssa Frescas produced a late rally in overtime, adding six points to keep the contest tense, but the Eagles’ cohesion and composure proved decisive.

This victory marks two consecutive wins for Cavan, following their earlier success against Fr Mathews, and leaves them sitting 6th in the Super League standings with a 3–3 record.

Beating a top-tier Wildcats side on their home court is no small feat, and the win highlights the Eagles’ ability to rise to the challenge as a team.

Next Saturday at 3 pm, Cavan return home to Virginia to face Liffey Celtics, looking to build on the momentum and continue showcasing the teamwork and resilience that carried them to this memorable road win.

U16 Cavan Eagles – Basketball Ireland Regional Tournament

The Cavan Eagles travelled to Bray today for the Basketball Ireland Regional Tournament, hosted by Dublin Raiders Basketball. It proved to be a fantastic event, with teams gathering from every corner of the country — Donegal Town, Brunell (Cork), Dublin Raiders, Ballina Pacers (Mayo), Tipperary Knights, and of course, our own Cavan Eagles. Huge credit is due to Dublin Raiders for organising such an excellent tournament.

The Eagles opened their campaign against the hosts, Dublin Raiders, and a superb first-half performance laid the foundation for a 27–23 victory. Next up were the Ballina Pacers, and once again the girls rose to the occasion. A strong all-round team effort secured a 41–29 win, allowing the Eagles to top their group.

Finishing first in their pool set up a final showdown with Brunell, who had also topped their group. Despite fatigue on both sides after a long day of competition, the teams produced a thrilling contest, with the lead changing hands no fewer than seven times. Trailing by five points at the end of the third quarter, the Eagles showed tremendous resilience and energy, rallying in the final period to claim a 32–27 victory.

There was electricity in the air at the Virginia Show Centre as McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles thrilled a packed home crowd with a commanding 82–69 win over Catalyst Fr. Mathews.

The Eagles came out flying, feeding off the energy of their supporters to open up a 25–10 first-quarter lead. Soleil Barnes was in unstoppable form early, knocking down shots from all angles on her way to a sensational 33 points, including seven three-pointers.

Fr.Mathews basketball club Cork., though, showed their pedigree in the second period. The experienced Gráinne Dwyer battled hard inside, finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while American duo Laila Blair and Lexie Givens led a spirited comeback. Blair was excellent throughout, pouring in 26 points, with Givens adding 17 as the Cork side cut the deficit to just three points by halftime.

The third quarter was a tense back-and-forth affair. Fr Mathews briefly edged in front, but the Eagles responded with grit and poise. Katie O’Sullivan was immense under the boards, recording a double-double (14 points, 14 rebounds), while Mazzie Harris brought energy and physicality, contributing 10 points and 8 rebounds.

Then came the turning point — a breathtaking 17–0 Eagles run in the fourth quarter that blew the roof off the Show Centre. With Barnes leading the charge, Ciara Tolan and Alex Mulligan added timely scores (8 points apiece), Niamh Tolan chipped in with 7, and Ciara Brady provided valuable defensive stops off the bench. Youngster Caitlin Carroll also impressed, coolly sinking both her free throws and gaining valuable court time.

The win gives the Eagles great momentum heading into a well-earned two-week break before travelling to Waterford to face the Wildcats on November 22nd.

Cavan Eagles battled their way to a 75–69 win over the Blue Demons in an electric contest at the Virginia Show Centre — a game packed with intensity, heart, and plenty of drama!

After a tight first half that saw the Eagles trail by just a single point (37–36), the team regrouped and took flight in the third quarter, outscoring the Demons 21–18 behind some clutch shooting from Dan Debosz, who led the team with 18 points.

The final period belonged to the Eagles’ grit and determination. Dominikas Kersys stepped up with big plays down the stretch, and the defence locked in to keep the Demons at bay. Despite a strong 20-point effort from Jack O’Leary for the visitors, the Eagles held firm to seal a well-earned win!

It was a true team performance — energy, effort, and togetherness from start to finish. 💪

A momentous occasion unfolded at the Virginia Show Centre, as McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles claimed their first-ever Women’s Super League victory, overcoming Midlands Park Portlaoise Panthers with a 70–57 triumph.

After two challenging opening rounds — a narrow 61–65 loss at Trinity Meteors and a 55–72 defeat at home to Brunell — the Eagles demonstrated remarkable resilience, composure, and growth, delivering a breakthrough performance before their passionate home crowd.

The Panthers came out firing, dominating the opening quarter 24–12, with Jessica Fressle spearheading the attack with six early points. Yet the Eagles’ response was both swift and spirited.

In the second quarter, Soleil Barnes and Niamh Tolan combined to spark a decisive 9–0 run, tallying 12 points between them and cutting the deficit to just five points by halftime (32–37). The Virginia crowd could sense the momentum beginning to shift.

The third quarter proved pivotal. Energised by their supporters, Katie O’Sullivan seized control, orchestrating a stunning 13–0 run that turned the game on its head. O’Sullivan was unstoppable, finishing with 21 points and four steals, inspiring her teammates with her leadership on both ends of the floor. Alex Mulligan and Ciara Tolan were immense with vitals scores and thwarting Panthers offence.

The Eagles entered the final quarter with a narrow 52–51 lead and never looked back. Barnes continued her excellent form with 18 points, while Tolan dominated under the boards with 13 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 steals. Inside, Mazzie Harris posted a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds, anchoring the Eagles’ interior presence. Off the bench, Ciara Brady provided crucial energy and composure during key stretches.

Although Fressle’s efforts yielded a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Panthers, the day belonged to Cavan. The Eagles connected on six three-pointers, moved the ball with precision, and tightened their defence at critical moments.

Our Masters team had a packed schedule today at the Malahide Masters Annual Tournament, entering as defending champions from last year.

💪 Two strong wins this morning over Swords and Dublin Sonics set up a much-anticipated Gold Semi Final clash with old rivals LT Utd this evening.

It was neck and neck right up to halftime, but some sharp outside shooting from LT opened up a 10-point gap. In a tough, physical battle our Eagles fought all the way, but couldn’t quite close it out, falling 47–35 at the final buzzer.

Mazzie made a name for herself at Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego, where she surpassed the 1,000-point milestone, before going on to play NCAA Division I basketball at UC Davis. At UC Davis, Mazzie played an exciting and athletic brand of basketball, showcasing her versatility, potent shooting, and rebounding. Big moments include scoring team-highs against Stanford and Long Beach, with hitting clutch free throws to seal a Big West Tournament upset over Hawaii.

Mazzie brings a dynamic mix of athleticism, defensive toughness, and shooting range to Cavan, and we’re excited to see her impact in the Women’s Super League this season.

We are thrilled to welcome Sophie Staunton to our Women’s Super League roster for the 2025/26 season!

Sophie made a major impact for Ireland at the FIBA U18 European Championship, where she delivered standout performances—averaging 11.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game—cementing her reputation as one of the country’s top young prospects.

She also played a pivotal role with Oblate Dynamos in the Women’s National League last season, showcasing her ability to compete at a high level and contribute on both ends of the court.

The girls wrapped up a phenomenal week at the EBIT International Tournament in Lloret de Mar, Spain, with a dramatic 63–58 overtime win in the final against Njardvik from Iceland — the very team they had narrowly lost to in the opening round. What a turnaround! 🔁🔥

The Knights battled through a tough group stage with three wins and one loss against top sides from Spain, Turkey, and Iceland. In the final, they led 15–14 after the first quarter, were tied 25–25 at halftime, and held a four-point lead going into the final stretch. A nail-biting fourth quarter brought the game to overtime at 51–51 — but the Knights dug deep and came out on top. 💪💚

A brilliant end to a memorable trip, full of hard-fought games, team spirit, and new friendships. Well done Áine, Emily and all the Knights — what a way to represent yourselves, your club, and your region on the international stage! 🌍🏆
